Nitrous Oxide Conscious Sedation, also known as “laughing gas,” is a type of sedation used in dentistry and other medical procedures to help patients relax and reduce anxiety.
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask that fits over the patient’s nose. The patient breathes in the gas and within a few minutes, they begin to feel relaxed and at ease. The level of sedation can be adjusted throughout the procedure to ensure the patient remains comfortable.
One of the benefits of nitrous oxide conscious sedation is that the patient remains conscious and able to communicate with the dental or medical team. The gas has a mild amnesic effect, which means that the patient may not remember much about the procedure once it is over.
